			How it works In a common rail system, pressure generation and injection are separate. Electronic diesel control (EDC) controls and regulates the individual injection components with the help of data from the sensors. Pressure generation The high pressure pump, driven by the engine and coupled to engine rpm at a fixed transmission ratio, generates the necessary pressure. This ensures the re-quired pressure in the rail largely independent of the engine speed and the quantity of fuel injected. Because of this almost uniform supply, the high pressure pump can be significantly smaller and configured with lower peak driving torque than a conventional injec-tion system. Pressure is regulated by a pressure control valve and/or by an intake regulator on the high pressure pump. The pressurised fuel in the rail is ready for injection. Injection The fuel is injected directly into the engine's combustion chamber by the injectors. They are supp-lied via short high pressure fuel lines from the rail. The injector consists primarily of an injection nozzle and a fast-switching sole-noid valve that controls the nozzle using mechanical actuators. The solenoid valve is driven by the engine control unit. Under a constant pressure, the injected quantity of fuel is proportional to the on-duration of the solenoid valve and therefore independent of engine and pump speed (time-controlled injection). Control and regulation With the help of the sensors, the engine control unit receives infor-mation on the accelerator pedal position and the current operating performance of engine and vehicle. The control unit evaluates the in-put signals and rapidly calculates the control signals for the high pressure pump, the injectors, and the other actuators.
